(comment) [Phantom Encounter] Go Nagai's hand-drawn color shikishi "Demon King Dante" Ryo Utsugi & Dante Shadow (signed)
The origin and masterpiece of Go Nagai's dark fantasy, "Dante the Demon King.'' The main character, Ryo Utsugi, and the spirit of the Demon King sleeping within him are one and the same.
This is an amazing hand-drawn color shikishi that captures the moment when the artist himself became one.
・ The exposed "red" tells us about the aesthetics of madness and fate
The first thing that catches the eye is the vivid red coloring applied to Ryo Utsugi's face. More than just coloring, the naked color expresses the demonic blood that is awakening within him and the agony of his human self being torn apart. This use of red, which seems to "dye" the face itself, is a characteristic method of visualizing passion and madness that Go Nagai has pursued throughout his career.
・ The devil's womb lurking in the jet-black shadow
The jet-black silhouette drawn behind Ryo is the shadow of the demon king Dante. It is not just a background, but the very birth of a huge power hidden in Ryo's deep psyche. The blue-black and eerie outline of this shadow perfectly embodies, in a small space, the intimidating feeling of being the leader of a demon army that has sworn to destroy all of humanity.
・ White hair and piercing eyes
Ryo's hair has been boldly treated with white, creating a strong contrast with the red of his face and the black of his shadow, while retaining the "light'' of when he was still an innocent boy. And the eyes that express a strong will and tragic determination, with a perfectly determined expression, overwhelm the reader.
・ "Manuscript" called shikishi
It retains the same energy as it did in its heyday. This shikishi is not just a fan service illustration. The force of the lines, the movement of the brush, the bleeding of ink, all of itIt boasts a breathtaking level of perfection, as if it had been cut directly from the original serial manuscript at the time. This is exactly the "feeling of the time" that reminds us of Go Nagai's heyday.
・ Miraculous twin shot. This is the ultimate collector's item
This piece of work, in which a human named Ryo Utsugi and a devil named Demon King Dante are both aligned on a single piece of shikishi, and is engraved with the master's signature, can only be described as a miracle.
