(comment)Acrylic painting of Ken Takakura's face from “Shin Abashiri Bangaichi: Saihate no Nagaremono”(year 1969), which Tadanori Yokoo did the poster design. Composition and the color is straight out, but the small details are different. Therefore it was probably something drawn in similar time, but not the genga for poster. The faded part on the stamp mark “Yokoo” is a thumbprint mark. Tadanori Yokoo appeared in many medias such as magazines and movies in the late 60's, as the new graphic designer with strong connection to underground cultures. Main frame of the Japanese graphic industry at that time was modern rationalistic designs from the west, such as Bauhaus. Bringing a Yakuza (Japanese mafia) movie into the design could certainly be a challenging work. Statement about “modern overcoming” in design, is seen in the classic book “1meter 70 rin no Blues” by Yokoo, but he mentioned himself as just one of the fans of Ken Takakura, and not as is thoughts. Even without knowing the background of the film, there are no doubt that your eyes will get arrested by seeing the keen-eye of Ken Takakura.
