(comment) The opening scene of the final episode of the second series of "Astro Boy" in which Osamu Tezuka himself speaks to the audience, in a live action sequence, with an original drawing of Astro Boy.

This large cel was carefully hand-treated by a veteran female animator who could handle colour specification etc for it's special purpose (live action use). However, the lines of Atom's eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth were not all set in one go. If you make a mistake when drawing, you can remove the lines but it will scratch the cel. Because of this there are around 20-30 cels that are not drawn well.

In the scene that was aired Tezuka himself appeared in real life. During the scene, an animated cut was inserted where Astro takes off his boots while standing and looking embarrassed. The first and last drawings of that animation were hand-drawn by Tezuka. They were drawn on an illustration board.

The live-action part took place in a room at Tezuka's home and was directed by his son, Makoto Tezuka. Two versions of the opening scene were filmed, Tezuka's original version and a cel version. This is the cell version of the shooting which was not used in the on-air program. The listing for this auction includes one large cel that was not used for the filming, two copies of Tezuka's original drawings, three cels of Astro taking off his boots, and three paper dougas. Please note that not all of the dougas were made by Tezuka.
