This bizarre short story magazine was founded in response to a plea from a thoughtful reader, succeeding the "Yoki-den" that ended in a commercial slump. This is the series that will go down in the history of Kitaro manga, whose existence was fully supported by the title "Kitar Graveyard" which was displayed on a large scale for the first time.
It was edited by Shigeru MIZUKI, following Yokiden. It is mostly colored with mizuki "Kitaro", but it is not a book but a form of "Kaiki Yomikiri Masterpieces". In the back of the first collection, there is no personal name of Mizuki, but the name of the group to which the writers belonging, such as Kiyoshi TANIGAWA and Ryuji MINAMI whose main battlefield was Togetsu Shobo, are described as "Tokyo Painting Society". The "Kitar Graveyard" itself consists of 19 volumes, but until the third volume Mizuki was involved in this publication (It is said that there was a financial trouble between Mizuki and the publisher, Usagi, which was the cause.). After the fourth collection, the main theme of the series, "Kitaro" was succeeded by Hiroyuki TAKEUCHI who was Mizuki's friend.
In the "Kitaro" which was published after the Kangyo edition, the name of Masami ITO, the author of the prewar picture-story show "Kitar Graveyard" which is said to have become the basis of "Kitaro" story, is listed as a person who wrote the draft probably in order to ensure the legitimacy of its continuation, and it is interesting to see the tactics of family feuds in those days. In "The Devil's Founder" a short story by Ryuji MINAMI included in the third collection, Kitaro and his son appear across the boundary of the title in a way that plays an important role in the story.
Nowadays, the image of Kitaro as the object or work of Shigeru MIZUKI has been established, but at that time, it can be seen that the atmosphere in which the existence of "Kitaro" was shared more widely with the preceding kamishibai as the originator.
