(comment) The original Gundam anime, which began airing in 1979, was canceled due to low viewership ratings. However, reruns and word-of-mouth sparked its popularity, and in 1980, Bandai released the first Gundam plastic model kit (commonly known as Gunpla), the "1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam."Gunpla, which allowed people to assemble the "mobile suits" that appeared in the anime with their own hands, became a huge hit and even a social phenomenon. Bandai's Gunpla became the biggest hit plastic model in Japan and continues to reign at the top of the model industry to this day. (Incidentally, Tamiya is in second place.) The word "Gunpla" itself is a registered trademark of Sotsu, which holds the copyright to the Gundam series. At the time, Gunpla required glue to assemble and had little color separation, making them primarily for painting. Nevertheless, during the first Gunpla boom (around 1980-1983), elementary school students lined up at model shops before they even opened, and in a part areas, children even skipped school to queue up at the shops. Reselling and hoarding also became a problem, and like during the Bikkuriman boom, sales were sometimes limited to lotteries or one per person. There were also "Gunpla hunts" similar to the Nike Air Max boom, but considering that the retail price of Gunpla at the time was 300 yen, the bad people who hunted them seem rather tame (Takasugi).
