(comment) Kazuo Umezu"Kage (Image) ~ Kaiki and Fantastical Tales Related to Mirrors~" was first serialized in "Teen Look" in 1968. Another version of oneself reflected in a mirror gains self-awareness and tries to take the place of the real person... A somewhat decadent and eerie atmosphere permeates the entire story, blending with psychological horror to create a masterpiece of Umezu horror that appeals to the emotions. As a Tankobon, it was first published by Sato Pro as "Kage," and has since been included in various editions by Asahi Sonorama, Kodansha, Kadokawa Shoten, and others, making it a representative work of Kazuo Umezu's short stories that can still be easily picked up today. In fact, there is a work that served as the original mold for "Kage (Image)." The title is "Me and Another Me," which is more direct about the content. It was Kashi-hon in six installments (volumes 10-15) in "Hana," a monthly girls' short story magazine published by the rental Wakakusa Shobou in the late 1950s. This work has not been included in Tankobon since its initial publication, making it difficult to access the original source. However, comparing it to the later "Kage (Image)," while the details differ, the themes and main plot are already complete. The biggest difference is the art style. In "Kage," the drawing is close to the style that would later become synonymous with Umezu, but in "Me and Another Me," the drawing is earlier, incorporating the influence of the popular "ballet-themed manga" of the time. At first glance, they seem like completely different works, each possessing its own unique charm. It is as if a completed work has been reborn anew. One can feel Umezu's passion and dedication to this work and motif. This time, we are offering 11 unused drafts that originated from "Kage (Image),"the original mold for "Me and Another Me." The trial and error of a genius-that's what made him a genius. Don't miss this glimpse into the trajectory of a masterpiece (Kubo).
