This is an original hand-drawn work by manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge, who later established a singular creative world through surreal works inspired by dreams, as well as travel pieces filled with the atmosphere of secluded, rustic hot-spring inns.
Here, neither proper draftsmanship, the rules of reality, nor ordinary logic can be imposed; instead, only Yoshiharu Tsuge’s true spirit seems to be struggling to emerge. The image on the reverse side alone is an extremely pared-down fairy-tale scene, yet it also contains further touches intended to bring it closer to Tsuge’s inner landscape.
A hollow, sparsely laid-out detached house faces the road with its walls left open.
Within this drawing, one can glimpse a tradition rooted in Japan’s world of fantastical painting.
At this moment, Tsuge seems to have been standing at the threshold of the spirit realm once faced by Japan’s painters of old, by Osamu Tezuka, and by Shigeru Mizuki.

This is not Chagall’s poetic fantasy, nor is it some introspective Redon, nor is it Klee’s idea that “art makes the invisible visible.”
