(comment) This is an original illustration featured in the “Japanese Yokai” section of the monthly picture book series “Interesting Japan! Story Picture Books,” published in fiscal year 2023 by Child Honsha, a long-established publisher of children’s books. Katsuya Hirose began creating yokai illustrations in earnest in 2010, and this past summer, an exhibition of his original artwork was held to commemorate the 15th anniversary of his career. Hirose’s yokai, which are beloved by a wide range of generations for their whimsical, playful strangeness rather than their dark, intense nature, are featured here. Although the actual picture book includes explanatory text, which leaves some empty space around the illustrations, this allows the yokai and their surroundings to blend together skillfully in the artwork
