(comment) This panel depicts the opening scene of the story, where the imprisoned Leo jumps from a ship carrying poachers and drifts on the open sea. In the "Manga Shonen" version and later Tankobon editions, the role of pulling Leo onto a raft is played by the star character Mr. Kutter, with his impression black beard and round bald head, but in this panel, a less commonly seen character takes on that role. It seems this was prepared for the serialization in " Manga Shonen " starting in 1950 (Showa 25) , as the panel layout is a four-column format, which is used when the manga is published in a B5-sized magazine (Kubo).
